Amid the calls for donations and support to aid the victims of the recent Taal Volcano eruption, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) IV-A on Wednesday said donating infant formula and feeding bottles is prohibited as these could put infants’ health at risk.

“As much as we want to feed these little babies, let us put in mind that the Philippine Milk Code “prohibits donations of infant formula, breast milk substitutes, feeding bottles, artificial nipples, and teats during emergencies,” the department said in a statement.

“The law bans indiscriminate distribution of these products as they put infants at greater risk of illness and death… poor understanding by the general public leads to the perception that the law is harsh and irrelevant.” On Wednesday, the Batangas local government published a post on their Facebook public information page asking the public for donations of breast milk and feeding bottles for infants at evacuation centers.

DOST IV-A said these put infants at even greater danger when clean water is not available, because “bottles cannot be cleaned, and congestion and lack of toilet facilities in evacuation centers make for extremely harsh environments.”
