The Department of Health has expressed support for calls to raise the minimum age requirement for smoking tobacco products, saying it is in line with the government’s efforts to protect public health.[Translation: We support that because it is good.]

“That’s good. We support that move by the United Nations, and also now it has gathered support from our medical societies,” Duque added. The Health chief was reacting to a call from a group of heart doctors to adopt the recommendation of the United Nations Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases to set the legal age for smokers at 21 years old instead of 18 at present.

“That is again an effort to protect the health of our people and the youth in particular,” Duque said. In July of this year, President Rodrigo Duterte the Republic Act 11346 which raises the excise tax on tobacco products and vapor products. Under the measure, which was enacted in July of this year, cigarettes will cost ₱45 per pack by 2020 and ₱60 by 2023. The Department of Health earlier said that higher taxes on cigarettes discourage people from picking up the addictive habit of smoking.
