Marriages and families are the bedrock of society. But in truth, not all of them are. There are some marriages that do not work, and the consequences of incompatibility, cruelty, unfaithfulness, irresponsibility, neglect and worse are actually a destruction of the individuals concerned and the society they are a part of. They actually destabilize society and the individuals involved. People trapped in abuse learn to become abusers themselves.
If a person's conscience indicates the need and belief in divorce it seems heavy-handed to dismiss it outright and keep it out of reach because others dismiss conscience in favor of close-minded dictatorship.Our Catholic Church hierarchy has to accept that in the matter of their beliefs and laws, those who wish to do so, will accept and follow them. There is where they should use their influence and their authority to their adherents.
