The Department of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the reported abduction of some Filipino seamen off the coast of Cameroon.

The government is monitoring developments in the kidnapping of seamen, including 13 Filipinos, in two boats off the coast of Cameroon, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

In a statement, the DFA said it was still confirming reports about the Filipino seamen through their manpower agency and the government of the Central African country. "The Philippine embassy in Abuja, which has jurisdiction over Cameroon, is verifying the report and has been instructed to make representations with the concerned authorities to ensure the safety and security of any Filipino national who may be held by the pirates," the DFA said in a statement.

The foreign news wire Agence France-Presse earlier reported that the 13 seamen kidnapped by pirates were originally believed to be Chinese until port documents showed they were Filipinos. The port document, according to the report, showed that nine Filipino hostages were taken from a Greek ship while another four were from a German-owned vessel.
