BREAKING: Senator Leila De Lima arrives in hometown to visit ailing mother

Senator Leila de Lima, who was allowed a 48-hour furlough from her two-year detention, arrived at her family's ancestral home in Iriga, Camarines Sur on Thursday morning to visit her critically-ill mother.

De Lima left her detention cell in Camp Crame at around 2:30 a.m. to fly to Legazpi Airport. From the airport, she traveled by land to their home in barangay San Agustin in Iriga. Two Muntinlupa courts granted de Lima's urgent motion for furlough to visit her 86-year-old mother, Norma, who is suffering from dementia. They gave de Lima a maximum period of 48 hours, including travel time, from August 14 to 15. She must return to her detention cell on or before August 16.

De Lima on August 9 asked the courts to let her temporarily leave her detention cell in Camp Crame as her family was advised to"prepare for the inevitable" as her mother's health continues to deteriorate. On August 11, she said her mother’s condition has improved, but it is still unpredictable on account of her old age and over-all weakened state.

The opposition senator has been detained for over two years over her alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade in the New Bilibid Prison.
