Appearing virtually during a public hearing by the Senate Committee of the Whole yesterday on the ASF issue, Dar said the trials are being undertaken by 10 United States enterprises.
The ASF has ravaged the hog industry located mostly in Luzon’s midsection and there are now fears that it has migrated to the Visayas. It first appeared in Rizal province in 2019. Estimates show that over P60 billion worth of damages have already been incurred by the local hog industry. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and management council has drafted a resolution declaring a state of calamity due to a widespread ASF infection and would soon be transmitted to President Duterte for approval.
“Our concern precisely is that the bureaucracy hopefully can act faster because the Senate Committee on Agriculture already endorsed this March 9, and it’s already April 17. If it’s a state of calamity declaration, one would like to think we should act swiftly,” he pointed out. Pangilinan is the main proponent of the Senate Resolution 676 urging the DA to recommend to the President the declaration of a state of calamity due to ASF’s severe impact on the swine industry.
