THE Department of Health is set to investigate the increase in the number of coronavirus disease 2019 cases in mining areas around the country after outbreaks had been recorded in three separate mining sites.

Eduardo Aratas, Philex Mining legal and administrative head, said the expanded testing was in line with the company’s initiative in controlling the spread of the disease.Also affected is the Sangilo Mine in Itogon, Benguet, operated by Apex Mining and the Hinatuan mining extraction site in Tagana-an, Surigao del Norte of Nickel Asia Corp.

“The transmission of the virus is higher, kasi nga sabi ng WHO, kapag nasa enclosed space ka, ang virus, nagi-i-stay longer sa air, ,” Vergeire told reporters in a media forum on Wednesday. Vergeire reminded mine operators that they are not exempted from following Covid-19 minimum health standards and protocols, such as wearing of masks, physical distancing and continuous disinfection.
