A consumer group called the tobacco smuggling bill 'anti-Filipino' and urged lawmakers to 'focus on real consumer problems' instead of amending the Agri Smuggling Law to include raw and processed tobacco products.

Urging for more protection of agricultural products against smuggling, a consumers group called on the attention of lawmakers to “focus on real consumer problems” instead of exerting efforts to amend the Agri Smuggling Law and include raw and processed tobacco products, calling the tobacco smuggling bill “anti-Filipino.”

The group stressed how teams composed of operatives from the Bureau of Customs, Philippine National Police, and Philippine Coast Guard were able to confiscate a total of P155 million worth of smuggled agricultural products during their recent raids, which includes 40 to 50 tons of imported onions and garlic worth P40 million and around 250 tons of imported onions and garlic amounting to P95 million.

“He should instead fight for the retention of essential food and agri products as the Smuggling Law’s core focus, as well as stiffer penalties for smugglers and cartels. Tobacco should be excluded from the list. Let foreign tobacco companies fight their own battles, they shouldn’t be allowed to ride on serious problems like agri smuggling in order to advance their agenda,” he went on.
