THE fire that gutted a vessel and killed seven passengers off Quezon a week ago was caused by a 'highly combustible material', according to a report by the Philippine Coast Guard .'Based on our initial findings in the investigation, there was a highly combustible material above the engine room, actually on the deck, where the fire started,' PCG Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu revealed.
Abu said the findings of the investigation on the Mercraft fire were submitted to the Department of Transportation which will disclose the full report.PCG spokesperson Commodore Armand Balilo, meanwhile, said the captain of Mercraft is currently in their custody.The owner of the ill-fated vessel, Mercraft Shipping Corp., has apologized to the victims of the blaze.
