Coach Rolando “Amat” Canlas Jr. and his young fencers grace the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum Tuesday.FORMER national coach Rolando “Amat” Canlas Jr. believes another Filipino could qualify in Olympic fencing under a continuous program that starts from the grassroots to the elite level.
“If we have a solid program for the grassroots, it takes one to two years for kids to get strong in the sport and become members of the national team,” he said. “From there, we have the Southeast Asian [SEA] Games and Asian Games. And, the dream of everyone, the Olympics.” Canlas has his Canlas Fencing Club, which only recently organized a successful 1st Burlington Inter-Club International Challenge held last week at the Alabang Town Center in Muntinlupa City.
