I COULDN’T let pass the Letter to Editor by Ms. Anke Reiffenstuel, Ambassador of Germany to the Philippines, dated August 1, 2022. It is full of fake news, half-truths, distortions and omits important facts. It’s frustrating when a respected diplomat stoops to propaganda and aggressive rhetoric without giving a more holistic view of what is really happening globally.
Previous attempts of active de-Russification in the wake of Euromaidan in 2014 pushed the Russian-speaking regions of Crimea and Donbass to secede from the state. Crimea in 2014, as a result of people expressing their free will in a referendum, spoke in favor of reunification with Russia . Since then, about 2 million Ukrainians have fled to Russia, most of them from South-East of Ukraine.
It’s noteworthy that on July 22, 2022, representatives of Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and the UN signed an agreement in Istanbul on establishing a grain corridor for the export of agricultural products from Ukraine via the Black Sea. It shows that Russia and Ukraine are still able to overcome difficulties for the sake of an initiative that will help mankind.
