Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu, special envoy to the Middle East, appealed on Wednesday to families of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Iraq to convince them to come home safe as Iraq is on the frontline of tensions between the United States and Iran.

“We are appealing to their families and relatives in the Philippines to convince the OFWs to take advantage of the government’s repatriation program,” Cimatu said, noting that at least 1,500 workers in Iraq have already expressed the desire to be evacuated amid the rising tensions in the Middle Eastern country.

The DENR chief is set to fly to Qatar on a special mission on Thursday. He said he will not allow the movement of Filipinos for evacuation unless the destination is safe.
