Citing reports, the CHR said that Bunduquin, 50, was shot several times in front of his store by two motorcycle-riding gunmen last Wednesday, May 31.
It said the police reported that Bunduquin's son chased after the assailants and accidentally bumped their motorcycle. One of the suspects sustained injuries and eventually died, while the other escaped, it also said. Local police authorities are now exploring all possible angles and determining whether or not the shooting was in connection with his media profession, it added."We note the swift action of the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Police Office in creating a Special Investigation Task Group dedicated to the conduct of follow-up operations. We are hopeful that this effort will help ascertain accountability of perpetrators and bring justice to the victim and his family,” it said.
The CHR reiterated its call for strengthened mechanisms to ensure media safety and protection. It is only when media practitioners feel safe to do their work without fear of attack or reprisal that the truth can prevail, it said. "It is incumbent upon the State to ensure the resolution of all media killings and harassment to curb impunity and create an enabling environment for press freedom," the CHR stressed.
