The Child Rights Network (CRN) has urged lawmakers to protect and defend the rights and well-being of children rather than punish them by reducing the minimum age of criminal responsibility (MACR) as what President Duterte wants.

“We call on legislators to be better than the previous Congress by enacting laws protecting the rights of our children and disregarding harmful bills such as reducing the MACR,” CRN stressed.

The network’s current convenor is the Philippine Legislators Council on Population and Development, Inc. “We call on legislators to expedite the passage of pro-children legislation, especially bills to uphold the following: Increasing the age to determine statutory rape; universal birth registration; teenage pregnancy prevention; inclusive education; an end to child marriage; an end to commercial and online sexual exploitation of children, and; positive discipline,” the network reiterated.

Nonetheless, CRN pointed out, the network still hopes that lawmakers will unite to protect the rights of children and use their good judgment and not simply, and blindly, follow Duterte’s marching orders.
