In 2007, several CPDRC inmates received worldwide attention after a security advisor to the Cebu government posted a video on YouTube that shows them dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Did you know it even ranked fifth on Time Magazine’s “Top 10 most popular viral videos” of the year? Little wonder the dance program became part of the prisoners’ daily exercise and rehabilitation.
“That, as you know, was the very beginning of the drug war . We underestimated how that would affect the jail and its operations, and we were surprised to see the jail change so rapidly before our eyes. So that was a big challenge. Things were changing so fast, and we had to be very nimble and flexible and sometimes it was hard to keep up,” she said.
“Dancing brightened their day and gave them hope and happiness while they were inside,” she said. “Even when the inmates weren’t rehearsing or dancing for the public, when music was playing over the loud speakers, inevitably, someone would break into dance and the rest of the jail would gather around and laugh or join in. Dance certainly seemed to be a joyful outlet for so many of them.”
Filming “Happy Jail” did affect her in many ways. According to Michele, she saw how powerful hope and faith can be through the inmates.
