ICYMI: Upsets highlight the first day of the Wesley So Cup pro chess tournament!

Unheralded Voltaire Marc Paraguya held Grandmaster Darwin Laylo to a draw on board 5 as the Cavite Spartans shocked the highly touted Pasig Kings Pirates, 11-10, in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines Wesley So Cup opener on Saturday, May 15.

Paraguya, an Arena Grandmaster, and Laylo split the point after 30 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening, Mikenas Defense in their rapid encounter. Carreon bested Woman Fide Master Sherily Cua on board 3, Roca trounced National Master Master Rudy Ibanez on board 4, Visca crushed Carl Espallardo on board 6, while Malupa outplayed Jaymarc Gutierrez on board 7.

Salvador beat Singaporean Wagish Kumar Rai on board 1, while Goh Wei Ming edged Lourecel Hernandez Ecot on board 2.
