THERE will hardly be any disputing the fact that among the universities and colleges in the Philippines that rank highest in global tallies for academic distinction are those identified with the Catholic Church — either because they have a clear Catholic mandate, as in the case of the University of Santo Tomas that is privileged with the character of being a 'pontifical' university — canonically linked to the Holy See and governed by its statutes, or because they are owned and...
That many of the graduates score excellently in licensure examinations is certainly a tribute to any institution — but this will be true of any institution, Catholic or not. Sadly, Catholic higher education has contented itself with run-of-the-mill classes in 'theology' that neither the students nor the professors take seriously. It would be interesting to find out how much of the Catholic faith the students of our Catholic universities and colleges know.
