MANILA - Grab Philippines said Friday its taxi-hailing service would resume operations in the cities of Baguio and Naga after quarantine guidelines were relaxed.

At least 400 Grab Taxi drivers will join the pilot program, while some 7,000 taxi drivers nationwide were trained by the platform to use cashless payments in compliance with transport guidelines, Grab Philippine said in a statement.

Grab trained meter-based and cash-based taxis prepare for the new normal by using its payment platform GrabPay, it said. Public utility vehicles are allowed to operate in general quarantine areas and are encouraged to use cashless or digital payments to lessen the risk of spreading COVID-19. “We believe that by adopting cashless payment for public transportation, we will reduce the risk of spreading the infection through cash, but likewise improve our contact tracing capability," said Grab Philippines President Brian Cu.

Using cashless payments will also help improve contact tracing capabilities in public transportation, Grab said.
