Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle reminded the faithful that the words they say have the power to either uplift or hurt the feelings of a person.

Tagle encouraged the faithful to utter words that will “generate life.”

“Let us be careful with our words. Words are not just sounds. Words create a certain condition. Through our words, people can become hopeful or happy but through our words, people could get discouraged,” said the prelate who heads the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in his homily on Christmas day.

“Through our words, people could get wounded. Through our words, people could feel insulted. Through our words, people could feel uplifted. God spoke His word—a word of salvation. What type of words do we utter?,” he added. “What is the quality of our speech? What is the quality of the exchange of text messages? What is the quality of communication? This Christmas, let us learn from God himself,” he said. “This is another way of looking at the birth of Jesus.

“The word has become flesh and He has spoken everything because the word is His son. What a beautiful way of looking at the birth of Jesus—it is not just birthing but it is some sort of a wording—giving flesh to a word,” he added.
