The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has made arrangements for the processing and analysis of the recorded material and data in the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) of the Lionair medical air ambulance that crashed on the NAIA runway Sunday night.

The FDR is the device used to record specific aircraft performance parameters onto a medium designed to survive an accident. The CVR is a flight recorder used to record the audio environment in the flight deck of an aircraft for the purpose of investigation of accidents and incidents.

Together they are the components of what is better known as the ‘black box’ or electronic flight data recorder, which is usually kept in a plane’s tail, where they are more likely to survive a crash.
