MANILA, Philippines — Meralco turned to its game-long defensive effort to slow down Barangay Ginebra, 87-80 and grab a 2-1 lead in their PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven semifinal series on Wednesday at the Dasmarinas Arena in Cavite.

The Bolts led by as many as 17 points, and had to stop a last-gasp 9-0 run by the Gin Kings inside the final two minutes, en route to grabbing the driver's seat in the semis.The Bolts were right on the money in keeping the Gin Kings ' veteran stars Christian Standhardinger, Scottie Thompson and Maverick Ahanmisi in check, limiting the trio to a poor shooting night.

The hard-banging Ginebra big man also shot atrociously from the foul line, making just four of his 11 attempts.Thompson only had eight points after going 2-of-11 from the field, though he had nine boards and four assists.Meanwhile, Ahanmisi finished with 13 points, but shot just 4-of-11 from the floor.Even combo guard Stanley Pringle, the Game 1 hero, finished with just four points after being limited to 14 minutes.
