San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza on Tuesday thanked all those who expressed their solidarity with them in condemning the killings in Negros island.

“Being one of the shepherds we are grateful for this expression nationwide because it’s not just in one place but in important places in the country where people also are expressing solidarity,” he told Church-run Radyo Veritas. On Tuesday, a Solidarity Mass was held at Sta Cruz Church in Manila in observance of the National Day of Mourning for Negros amid the spate of killings there.

“Our people are longing for an end of barbaric killings due to the drug war and the anti-insurgency campaign,” he said. “We reiterate the call for integral peace — one that addresses social injustice and promotes economic equality and inclusive development for all,” Alminaza said. In protest of the spate of killings of farmers and human rights workers, Bishop Alminaza also ordered the ringing of church bells in his diocese starting last July 28.“Let the tolling of the church bells call us to a collective prayer, for us to beg God to touch the hearts of perpetrators, as we call on responsible government agencies to effectively address the series of deaths,” added Alminaza.
