Tagbilaran Bishop Alberto Uy cited the strong faith of Filipino workers in Hong Kong who continue to attend holy masses despite the growing unrest in that territory.

“It is so heart-warming to see many of them who came to attend the holy mass despite the social unrest that Hong Kong right now is suffering. This speaks a lot of the Filipino courage and deep faith in God,” Uy said over Church-run Radio Veritas.Bishop Uy is currently in Hong Kong to lead a spiritual retreat for the members of the Oasis of Love community.

“I am happy to tell you that for some OFWs here in Hong Kong, there is a growing awareness on their role as missionaries. Somehow, they understand that they are here not only to work and find a living but also, to share the gift of the Christian faith. They see their presence here as part of God’s will, as their vocation for mission,” the prelate said.

The bishop called on the more than 200,000 Filipino workers in Hong Kong to remain alert for their safety, to avoid areas of protests and tension, and to heed the advice of the Philippine Consulate. “We also advised them to heed the call of our Department of Foreign Affairs to stay alert and avoid areas of protests, and to refrain from wearing or carrying anything that could mistakenly identify them as part of the protest action,” Uy said.
