ENTERTAINMENTJust a few weeks before their “Be Us” album showcase, INQUIRER.net met with Gelo, Akira, JL, Mikki, and Nate for an exclusive virtual interview. They were a little shy when the call connected, but the ice was broken when this writer mentioned that she had been to their past mediacons and performances. Throughout the chat, the excitement of having someone listen to their music out of genuine interest, not just as an extension of work, was palpable.
Like many P-pop groups today, BGYO underwent a difficult training period at Star Hunt Academy, along with their sister group BINI. Mikki, who was the shyest when the call connected, appeared to be excited when he was gestured by the writer to speak, where he fondly admitted that being part of the group helped in developing his self-confidence.
While on the topic of the group’s journey, the topic then shifted to Gelo’s leadership skills as they reflect a strong sense of togetherness throughout the chat. “Si Kuya Gelo po kasi, kapag may sinasabi sa’min [mapa-happy or seryoso], light pa rin siya. Ayaw niyang ma-feel na down ‘yung energy ng members,” JL said, while his members said he’s doing a “good job.”
“Huwag matakot magkamali. Kasi doon ka matututo. Game on lang kahit magkamali ka,” Akira says, chiming in. On the other hand, Nate did an impromptu performance of “Tumitigil ang Mundo,” where he rapped “Daming nakilala kahit isa ‘di umubra / Naglibot na wala talaga / Mas maganda sa’king mata,” pointing out he’s a fan of its adlibs. Meanwhile, Gelo said the group and fans can relate to “Panahon,” saying “‘Yun ang tumatak sa’kin,” while Akira and Mikki nodded.
The possibilities are endless for BGYO as they forge ahead in their career. Apart from being included in global music charts, being listed as one of the international groups to watch out for, bagging awards left and right, representing P-pop in their unique way, and performing in different events. Despite this, Mikki says the group is currently at the stage of “exploring” their sound.“We’re still in the stage na nage-explore kami even if we’ve been around for two years,” he stressed.
