Bayan Muna Representative Carlos Zarate on Tuesday, April 6, called on the leaders of the House of Representatives to again set a hearing on the fees being charged by the Manila Electric Company amid the reimposition of the enhanced community quarantine in the “NCR Plus” bubble.
The same committee already conducted last year a hearing on the sudden spike in the electric bills of consumers duringimposition of the ECQ in Metro Manila and other parts of the country due to the COVID-19 outbreak. “Recall that even Pres[ident] Duterte reported a downward trend in demand during the lockdown period in 2020. This is the same case now, especially with the NCR [Plus] bubble under lockdown, many businesses and factories are closed or just operating at half capacity. Also the simultaneous shutting down of power plants of gwnerating companies have been done before to jack up power rates,” he noted.
Meralco vice president and spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga last March 30 said electricity bills would likely go up in April due to rising demand and increased spot market prices.
