Former Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza is deeply saddened and troubled by the public’s and the government’s apparent indifference towards the commemoration of the Plaza Miranda bombing in 1971 and the assassination of former Senator Ninoy Aquino Jr. in 1983.

Former Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza is deeply saddened and troubled by the public’s and the government’s apparent indifference towards the commemoration of the Plaza Miranda bombing in 1971 and the assassination of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. in 1983, both of which happened on August 21.

It has been 39 years since Ninoy Aquino was murdered, but Atienza said the day came and went without so much as a proper remembrance on the part of the government and the public. “While it is true that we should forgive those who had been responsible for this treacherous act, we must not and we should not forget what they did,” Atienza said in a statement.

Atienza, who today is probably the only living survivor of the Plaza Miranda bombing, was then one of the youngest candidates for councilor, belonging to the opposition and was on stage when the bombing happened.“Ninoy’s murder had awakened the people and spurred them into action. Whether the government considers it important or not, no one can deny Ninoy’s integral part in our nation’s history. His death inspired me and millions of Filipinos to fight for our democracy and freedom.
