ILOILO CITY – The Philippine Army foiled a landmine attack by the New People’s Army in Tubungan town, Iloilo province.
The 61st Infantry Battalion recovered a landmine and electrical wire following a clash with communist rebels on Thursday, September 7. Troops from the 61st IB troops were in the boundary of Barangays Bato and Cadabdab when they engaged five NPA rebels from the Sibat Platoon of the NPA Southern Front Committee in Panay Island.
Lt. Col. Arturo Balgos Jr., 61st IB commander, said troops were acting on information from concerned residents when they engaged in a firefight with the NPA who withdrew in different directions.The 61st IB is reiterating its appeal to families of NPA rebels and called on the fleeing guerrillas to voluntarily surrender and return to the fold of the law.
