Economic woes, geopolitical tensions, and future-proofing will be top of mind as leaders gather in Bangkok. APEC2022

BANGKOK, Thailand – In the CEO Summit – among the first major events during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ’s Economic Leaders’ Week – there was one idea that was repeated over and over at a “scene setting” panel: It’s no longer 2019.

Discussions ahead of AELM touched on the years-long shutdown of borders and economies because of the COVID-19 pandemic, health systems whose vulnerabilities were exposed because of COVID-19, and food security issues that are also linked to climate change and geopolitical tensions, including Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., speaking at the “scene setting” panel at the CEO Summit on Thursday, November 17, said APEC’s future lies in how it finds a way to “revitalize its role as the region that drives the global economy.”
