Anthrax, according to the US-Centers for Disease and Control Prevention , is a serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis.

“There was a total of 12 suspect cases reported as of December 22, 2022, of which, three tested positive for Bacillus anthracis via PCR,” the DOH said.“It is also a zoonotic disease that is transmitted from animal to human usually via direct skin contact or consumption of contaminated food or drink,” the DOH said. The Department of Agriculture in Cagayan Valley reported around that same time the deaths of four carabaos, all positive for the illness.

“According to the latest reports from the DOH Epidemiology Bureau [EB] and the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit [RESU] of Region II, there have been no additional human cases of Anthrax recorded and no additional deaths among carabaos as of January 3. The health event has now been tagged as controlled,” the agency said in a statement.

“All types of anthrax have the potential, if untreated, to spread throughout the body and cause severe illness and even death.”“Doctors have several options for treating patients with anthrax, including antibiotics and antitoxin. Patients with serious cases of anthrax need to be hospitalized,” the US-CDC said.
