Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo M. Año proposed Monday the creation of a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) similar to the US department to harmonize anti-terrorism and law enforcement objectives.

Año made the proposal when he defended DILG’s proposed 2020 budget of P236.2 billion which is three percent or P7.5 billion more than the 2019 budget of P228.7 billion.

Australia and the United Kingdom also have their own security departments like the US DHS that also take care of their borders.Año said that human trafficking is taking place at the country’s back door and different ports. On reports that there could be several convicts released from the country’s various penitentiaries under the controversial Good Conduct Time Allowance that had been able to leave the country, Año said the DILG is still trying to verify this ‘’raw report.’’

At present, the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Corrections are trying to locate the 1,914 convicts sentenced for heinous crimes and released by BuCor from 2014 under the GCTA, Año said.
