Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo M. Año issued the order on Monday even if the country’s total hog deaths already rose to 62,000 due to African Swine Fever.
“The heat treatment of these processed meat products should be in accordance with ASF inactivation conditions set by the World Organization for Animal Health [OIE],” Año said. They argued that there has been no testing done that will ascertain if processed pork products are free from ASF. “We have requested the Department of Agriculture to test all frozen meat in cold storage facilities, through an independent third party, but no official action has been taken,” SINAG said.
As for Bohol, Govenor Arthur Yap said he is willing to open his province to all hog-related products if there will be a guarantee letter from the DA that the national government will have enough compensation for Boholano backyard raisers that will be affected by ASF.
