MANILA - AirAsia said Friday it would offer discounts on fares and baggage to spur tourism as the coronavirus outbreak slow world air travel.

The budget carrier announced the 30 percent discount on base fares and 22 percent off on baggage allowance after its larger rival, Cebu Pacific, said it was reducing domestic base fares to as low as P88.

AirAsia said it would offer the base fare cut for Manila to Caticlan, Puerto Princesa, Bacolod, Cebu flights as well as other destinations. Long-haul flights for AirAsia X routes from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney, Seoul and Fukuoka are available at "great value prices" during the sale, it said. Premium Flex fares will also be slashed by 30 percent. The promotion runs until Feb. 23 for flights from Feb. 24 to Sept. 30, 2020, AirAsia said.

The local tourism industry lost about P14.8 billion in February, as tourists postpone travel plans due to fears of contracting the virus, Undersecretary Art Boncato Jr told reporters in Malacanang.
