According to the latest census implemented by the Philippine Statistics Authority in 2020, it ranked 9in the list of highly urbanized cities outside of the National Capital Region with the highest population density or number of persons in a square kilometer of land. Considered as the regional center of Northern Mindanao, it contributed more than a quarter of the total P837 billion regional economy for the period 2018 to 2020.
