COVID-19 infections in the country reached a single day record high of 21,819 on Friday, Jan 7, with another record-high 13,718 new cases recorded in Metro Manila alone. | via onenewsph

According to David, the single day positivity rate in Metro Manila has reached 46.3 percent, with the seven-day average spiking to a “critical” 38 percent this week from less than 1.0 last month. The independent research group uses risk classification metrics based on covidactnow.org, which is different from those used by the national government.

“We have to protect our health care system, this is so important. If you are mild, please stay at home, please use telemedicine because we need to preserve our beds for the critical and severe patients who will need them,” he added.Austriaco also pointed out that getting tested is the best way for those who have symptoms to determine if they have COVID-19 or just the regular flu.

The DOH said there were 77,369 active cases, representing 2.7 percent of the total cases. A total of 129 patients died, bringing the number of mortalities to 51,871. “We were successful in delaying the entry of Omicron. Although again, from the get-go, we said we can only delay this, enough to give us time to ramp up our vaccination to protect our population and number two, to prepare our health care capacities and facilities,” acting presidential spokesman Karlo Nograles said at a press briefing.
