WITH 19 people killed, schoolhouses that were meant to be polling places burned, and bold attacks against the election process, i.e.

, in Puerto Princesa, destruction of ballots before elections, assaulting opposing candidates before and during election day resulting in some deaths, as well as ingenious ways of vote-buying, I would not call the Barangay Sangguniang Kabataan Elections 2023 peaceful and orderly overall. Worse, they seem to portend what is to come in the next national elections.

As mentioned last week, elections seem to be the only game in this country where people who win can pull themselves up quickly from the poverty lines of discontent that abound. Take the BARMM region that has not fully stabilized politically and socially, and note why the fiercest wars for electoral votes are waged there. It becomes a matter of life or death when political positions seem to be the only way to a viable life.
