THE PHILIPPINES posted a $612-million balance of payment (BoP) surplus in December, bringing the full-year level to a record deficit of $7.3 billion.

Gross international reserves rose to $96.1 billion at the end of December from $95.1 billion a month earlier. Merchandise imports slid by 1.9% to $10.78 billion in November from a year earlier, while exports jumped by 13.2% to $7.10 billion, according to data from the local statistics agency. Based on International Merchandise Trade Statistics , the trade deficit for January-November 2022 reached $53.7 billion, up 44.7% from the $37.1-billion de“Aside from inflows from BSP’s operations, the country’s BoP surplus in December was likely helped by a narrower trade decit as import prices continue to soften,” Domini S. Velasquez, chief economist at China Banking Corp. said in a Viber message.
