So far, there are now 15 cases against the alleged unconstitutionality of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) as four more petitions were filed with the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday, July 23.

Similar to the 11 cases filed the past three weeks, the four new petitions also asked the SC to stop temporarily the implementation of the new law under Republic Act No. 11479. petition was filed by 1986 Constitutional Commission members Dr. Florangel Rosario Braid and professor Edmundo Garcia.

They told the SC that RA 11479 violates the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the right of the people to peaceably assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances. The youth groups told the SC that “the Anti-Terror Law may validly be challenged on its face because, if applied, the law is poised to infringe upon acts which fall under the exercise of freedom of expression – activities which are otherwise constitutionally protected.” petition was filed by a group of Muslims who called themselves Bangsamoro people who are “original inhabitants of Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago and its adjacent islands.
