A total of 121 convicts, freed due to the implementation of the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) Law, have so far surrendered to various police stations across the country.

But the number of those who surrendered, all of them convicted for rape, murder and other heinous crimes, was still way below the almost 2,000 GCTA-convicts that were released and are still to be accounted for by the government.

Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac, spokesman of the Philippine National Police , said that 25 of those who surrendered were already turned over to the BuCor, while the rest were still undergoing the necessary processing of papers. Of the GCTA-freed convicts, 43 of them were convicted of rape, 38 were sentenced to life imprisonment due to murder while 12 were convicted of robbery with homicide.

Banac said they expect more convicts to surrender on the days leading to the final day of the 15-day deadline given by President Duterte to surrender. As soon as the 15-day deadline lapses, Banac said they will start deploying the police tracker teams to run after those who did not surrender.
