The British Museum has postponed a talk on Ancient Israel and Judah, part of Jewish Culture Month, after learning that many registered attendees planned to deliberately disrupt the event. The museum cited a responsibility to ensure safety and prevent intimidation, while the Board of Deputies of British Jews condemned the actions and vowed to reschedule. The talk, to be given by Dr Paul Collins, was set to examine significant artifacts and historical forces in the region from 900 to 50 BC.

The British Museum has postponed a lunchtime talk about Ancient Israel and Judah due to security concerns . The event, part of a series celebrating Jewish Culture Month, was scheduled to feature Dr Paul Collins , Keeper of the Department of the Middle East, discussing political, cultural, and imperial forces in the region between 900 and 50 BC.

Significant artifacts, including inscriptions and monuments from the area, were to be showcased. Topics were to include the collapse of the Canaanite civilization and the rise of subsequent powers such as the Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, and Seleucid empires, along with the emergence of the Judean dynasty between 141 and 37 BC. The museum announced that the postponement followed information that a significant number of registered attendees intended to deliberately disrupt the event, preventing others from participating in good faith.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews expressed deep regret, stating they would not allow extremists to prevent the public from enjoying such events and are working with the museum to reschedule. Historian Simon Montefiore commented on the troubling nature of cancelling a talk about ancient history for security reasons.

The British Museum affirmed its commitment to Jewish Culture Month, education, and cultural dialogue, noting that while it recognises lawful protest and freedom of expression, it must ensure events can proceed safely without intimidation for speakers, staff, and visitors. The decision to postpone was made to protect the event's integrity and the audience experience, with a plan to reschedule it in a secure environment.

The museum reiterated its dedication to providing a space where history, culture, and scholarship can be explored openly, respectfully, and without disruption
