Pashinyan: Armenia Seeks Diplomatic Ties and Border Opening with Türkiye, Doubts CSTO Return
ArmeniaTürkiyeDiplomacy

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan outlines Armenia's vision for stronger ties with Türkiye, including diplomatic relations and border reopening. He also expresses skepticism about Armenia's return to the CSTO and confirms Armenia's ambitions to join the European Union.

Armenia n Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has asserted his ambition for Armenia and Türkiye to eventually establish diplomatic relations and reopen their long-closed land border, positioning this move as a foundational element of Armenia ’s broader geopolitical strategy.

Speaking at a press conference in Yerevan on Wednesday, Pashinyan characterized recent discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as “open and sincere,” underscoring that the agenda extended beyond conventional normalization efforts to encompass state-to-state interactions.\“All issues were discussed – from the opening of communications to the restoration of the historical Ani bridge,” Pashinyan stated, according to state-run Armenpress. He acknowledged that no concrete agreements were materialized but emphasized a long-term perspective. “Such complex and profound matters cannot be resolved with a singular action. We must cultivate trust and prepare the public.” He further affirmed: “I am certain that we shall attain that juncture: diplomatic relations will be established, and the border will be opened.”\Regarding Armenia’s standing within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Pashinyan reiterated that resuming active participation is unlikely, citing the bloc’s perceived failure to support Armenia during times of crisis. “We suspended our participation due to the CSTO’s inability to fulfill its commitments,” he stated, referencing Yerevan’s earlier decision to abstain from CSTO events and cease financial contributions. “At present, withdrawal appears more probable than rejoining.” Separately, during a meeting in Brussels, Pashinyan explicitly outlined Armenia’s aspirations for European membership. “Indeed, Armenia aspires to become a member of the European Union,” he declared. “Irrespective of the ultimate outcome, we shall persist in implementing reforms aligned with European standards.” He underscored his commitment to the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, characterizing it as a pivotal platform for reform and modernization
