This year’s World Meteorological Day, with theme, ‘Count every drop; Every drop counts,’ was commemorated in troubled times. The dreaded COVID-19 pandemic took the shine off of it.

What would have been a landmark event, marking the 70th year of coming into being of the World Meteorological Organisation, turned out to be an almost non-event.

It would be recalled that during last year’s commemoration, NiMet used a one-week expanded programme to establish a “catch them young” strategy by inaugurating the Young Meteorological Ambassadors among selected secondary schools. Thinking of the ever-increasing challenges posed by unpredictable weather events and what advantages our country stands to benefit when fresh science-inclined minds are plucked right from the cradle, one hopes the agency never loses focus on this ingenious scheme.

The Director General of NiMet, Prof Sani Abubakar Mashi, in his WMD press release, said: “Fresh water is vital for life. On average, a human being cannot survive more than three days without it. Water is essential for the production of our food, virtually all our goods and services and for the environment. The world including Nigeria, faces increasing challenges posed by water stress, floods and droughts and lack of access to clean supplies.

Turning a risk into an opportunity requires putting water at the heart of climate action plans and coordinating across borders. All sectors of society must mobilize, and everyone has a role to play. This year’s World Water Day and World Meteorological Day, on March 22 and 23, respectively, were celebrated under extraordinary circumstances. The UN urged everybody in the world to come together as a human family to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, with each institution playing its part.
