Former Kogi governor, Clarence Olafemi, blames politicians for the upsurge in kidnapping and armed robbery in the state due to the proliferation of firearms that were deployed for the 2019 general elections.

According to him, cases of kidnapping and armed robbery increased immediately after the presidential and National Assembly election in the state. Olafemi, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party , who spoke with newsmen on the security situation in Kogi, noted that those perpetrating the criminal acts were armed by politicians to rig the elections in their favour.

“Armed robbery and kidnapping have been on the increase on daily basis. The guns given to the youths by the politicians are now being used to commit crime.“Election in a democratic setting must be free, fair and credible. Victory in an election is no longer based on votes, politicians have bastardized the process. Intimidating the voters in an election with the use of arms is very disastrous to our democratic growth,” he said.
