The United Nations dedicated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It defined Elder abuse as “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person.”According to the UN, “In many parts of the world elder abuse occurs with little recognition or response.
“I went to a branch of my network provider and I discovered the name of the person with the phone number so I returned to the bank to report. Till today, my money has not been refunded. That is why whenever I get my pension alert and I am unable to transfer it to my other account, I rush to the ATM or PoS to withdraw everything.”
The don said, “The aged, whether they are under a pension or not, are within the social category facing absolute poverty in Nigeria. They are abused physically, stigmatised and some of them are accused of living long because they allegedly keep using the heads of younger ones to prolong their own lives. They suffer isolation, are rejected by society and in some cases, under the trauma, poverty, isolation, and loneliness they are facing.
He emphasised the need for a social policy tailored to accommodate the aged as well as welfare allowances and equitable distribution of aid. Attoh added, “Oftentimes, what makes them to be maligned is that they cannot take care of the necessities of life such as their health care because there is no health insurance. So you find someone who is elderly and poor without family members to look after him or her, oftentimes looking like a mad person, so there is a tendency for people to look down on such a person or believe the person is mad.
“The only way we can help to alleviate the sufferings of the elderly is that religious and non-governmental organisations have to take on some of these responsibilities. Old age is a blessing and not a curse but it becomes a curse when the society itself does not take care of its senior citizens.” He also stated that the breakdown of the extended system peculiar to Nigeria in the nuclear system structure further caused the neglect of the elderly.
He added that elderly people who were destitute had a low life satisfaction, feeling of worthlessness and a poor concept of life, and as a result, would pray for death. He added that those who weren’t on pension depended on the little that came from their immediate surroundings thereby getting further impoverished.
They boast “ you re talking to a an elderly man” but forgetting the elderly man lack wisdom to fight for his right , lack understanding to serve and the future. He ll also boast “ we don come before you” all na for greediness …
