Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo has declared Nigeria cannot afford to fail her people and the international community in the task of advancing the course of development on the African continent.

Although he said some of their performances has been great, he told them that think tanks remain important tools for mobilising ideas and actions that influence the public policy processes especially for stimulating public debates and offering creative and practical solutions for tackling remote governance challenges that we face.

He said further that “if the government saw a pertinent need to establish a strategic level think tank institution as far back as independence, the need has even become more pertinent now because the world has become more dynamic with human challenges that government need to respond to in an informed manner.

In his remarks, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha said developed nations of the world achieved greatness through contributions of think tanks which were developed in policy documents for the growth of such countries. “In most developed countries, think tanks work closely with government to provide tailored advise to support evidence based policy making. However, in some developing countries, government remain sceptical in matters in maximally utilising inputs from think tank.

“Combined with the utilisation of think tank, strategic thinking also play an important role. There are questions that we must ask ourselves. Could it be that the think tanks are not engaging policy makers on key issues or could it be that the policy makers are not engaging the think tank properly? Why is the impact of strategic think tank not adequately felt on the issue of governance especially under a democratic dispensation.
