The Federal Government has commenced compensating property owners affected by the construction of the 700-km Lagos-Calabar Highway, with payments commencing today, May 1, 2024.

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, disclosed this information during a stakeholders meeting in Lagos State on Wednesday.Earlier, Umahi stated that the compensation would be paid to property owners located on the gazetted federal government right-of-way, utilizing the government’s old compensation rate.

He also revealed plans to install solar cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge by June, following proactive measures to address the condition of piles supporting the bridge, which have been damaged by erosion and illegal dredging. His words: “We are working on a number of bridges inherited, we inherited construction works at Eko Bridge, Marina Bridge, and Liverpool Bridge, all done by Build Well.”

Umahi highlighted the economic importance of the coastal highway project, which will connect nine states, including Lagos, and align with the deep-sea port, hi-tech roads, and Dangote Refinery, supporting economic diversification along the corridor.
