A team of surgeons have successfully transplanted a pig kidney into a living patient for the first time, the hospital said on March 21, 2024. The four-hour-long operation was carried out on March 16 on a 62-year-old man suffering from end-stage kidney disease, the hospital said.

Slayman said he agreed to the pig kidney transplant as “not only as a way to help me, but a way to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive.”Slayman is Black and the hospital said the procedure could be of particular benefit to ethnic minorities who suffer from high rates of kidney disease.

Over 27 Million Nigerians Exposed to Chronic Renal Diseases and Kidney FailureGrowing patronage of poor lifestyle habits and other abuses are exposing more than 27 million Nigerians to chronic renal diseases, kidney failure, and deaths. Besides the high-risk environment, the galloping cost of renal care has pushed remedial efforts beyond most sick Nigerians. Already, there are about 272,400 kidney-related deaths every 12 months.
