UNGA won’t discuss xenophobic attacks — Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has said the xenophobic attacks which affected Nigerians in South Africa will not be discussed at the United Nations General Assembly .

Mr Onyeama said the UNGA is not a forum to take issue of the crises that just happened in South Africa, because the affected countries have the capacity to settle it within themselves.“We have not gotten to that stage. Rather, it is something that can be sorted out amongst ourselves,” the minister said.

He also added that President Muhammadu Buhari will be going to South Africa in October where a binational commission between South Africa and Nigeria will be formed at the levels of heads of state. Concerning UNGA, the minister disclosed the overarching theme for the 74th UNGA as ‘Galvanising Multilateral Efforts for Poverty Eradication, Quality Education, Climate Action and Inclusion.President Buhari will be the 5th head of state to issue his national statement at the assembly. This, according to the minister, “”Tis great because when you consider the number of head of states that will be issuing their national statements, approximately 185 or so, President Buhari gets to speak early.

“This is a very high up advantage because he will have the attention of the world and also get the opportunity to project the country and articulate the priorities of his government and our country.”High-level meetings and side events will also take place during the UNGA.
