Opinion by simonkolawole: Understanding the PeterObi dilemma via thecableng PeterObi 2023Elections

How time flies! I met Mr Peter Obi for the first time almost 19 years ago — in August 2003 to be specific. He had come to the THISDAY head office in Apapa, Lagos state, on a visit to Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, then Sunday Editor. I was the Saturday Editor. As I saw him in front of Adeniyi’s door, I recognised him instantly: his face had been all over the papers.

The following weekend, I “officially” enlisted in the campaign for electoral justice in Anambra state through my weekly column. The title of my first article on it was “The Man They Call the People’s Governor”. I highlighted the electoral banditry that took place in the state on April 19, 2003. But if I thought getting justice was going to be a walk in the park, I was awfully mistaken. As a delay tactic, PDP had lined up 425 witnesses. APGA had 45 and INEC 12.

But Obi’s candidature, which has been gathering momentum since he left the PDP and joined the Labour Party , is getting hit by the day. His strength is becoming his weakness: the fan base. His followership has clearly caught fire and is spreading not just on social media but also on the streets in many parts of the country. But some of his overzealous supporters are so unruly that this is turning out to be a baggage for him. It is putting off a lot of people.

simonkolawole PeterObi 2. Kolawale starts out by showing his familiarity with the man PO, before and after his stint as Anambra Gov. Talks up his doggedness, love for the oppressed in society and sincerity of purpose (this were not really highlighted, just left for the reader to deduce). However,

simonkolawole PeterObi I'm surprised that a seasoned journalist will also tow this line about Peter Obi's supporters Where in the world does demonising a candidate's supporters ( not the candidate ) make him loose support or votes Maybe this is just a hack job ....nothing else can explain it

simonkolawole PeterObi To associate Obi with Buhari in any way is quite ludicrous considering Tinubu himself happily took credit for installing the current administration. And if PO's dilemma is his supporters, how would you describe BAT's supporters that repeatedly bully and harass Nigerians offline?

simonkolawole PeterObi Obi pandora liar

simonkolawole PeterObi Good write up, but I think you missed a crucial point, which made your summary biased. PO has TOLD his supporters to be VERY CIVIL. It's important you state that. If I may go further, they are even better than those that carry caskets, etc to bring in this govt. Thanks.

simonkolawole PeterObi The 'Lagos media' is not joking. 😂🤣

simonkolawole PeterObi No matter how much you're paid to spin stories, remember that David has parents and siblings. Would you exchange your son with him?! Would you sell your sons organs to suit a narrative?
