Undergraduates of the Kwara State University and Kwara State Polytechnic, Olamilekan Adebayo and Ibrahim Omotosho, respectively, have been sentenced by the Kwara State High Court for their involvement in cybercrime.

They were sentenced to various jail terms by Justice Sikiru Oyinloye after pleading guilty to separate charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. One of the charges read, “That you, Ibrahim Omotosho on or about April 30, 2021, in Ilorin, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did cheat by impersonation by pretending to be one Tony Carpenter, a white male and citizen of the United States of America, with the email accountto obtain iPhone 12 Pro from one Jennylynn Ostman under the pretence that you were in love with her, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code Law and punishable under Section 324...

Following the plea of the students, the EFCC counsel, Innocent Mbachie, urged the court to sentence them based on their pleas and the evidence tendered against them. Delivering judgment, Justice Oyinloye noted that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Adebayo to one year imprisonment with a fine option of N100,000.
