Transforming Nigeria’s oligarchic democracy

Amid the relief and euphoria that followed the peaceful conduct of the recent governorship election in Edo State, it is tempting to ignore the challenges that bedevil Nigeria’s fragile democracy. Indeed, so vitriolic and acrimonious was the campaign that preceded the election that Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora held their collective breath.

A second perception is that Nigeria’s brand of democracy is considerably different from advanced Western democracies from which the country borrowed its own. Arguably, what obtains in Nigeria is best described as oligarchic democracy. Before going any further, it is useful to define the concept of oligarchy here.

Oligarchic democracy is said to have been mainstreamed when the control of power by a group of the political elite becomes normalised as part of the national experience of democracy. But, even more worrisome, oligarchic democracy leads to thewho feel alienated and powerless.
